Essinghausen ( Low German Esek [h] ousen ) is a village and eastern district of the city of Peine in the Peine district in Lower Saxony . The federal motorway 2 runs north and near the town .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1311 as "Esekeshusen". The name is made up of the genitive of the personal name "Esik" and the ending "hausen". Places with this naming scheme "Personenname - ing [e] - settlement name base word" are called Barsinghausen type. The name changed from "Esekhusen" to "Eseckhusen" and finally to Essinghausen.

On the occasion of the regional reform, Essinghausen became a district of the city of Peine on March 1, 1974. Before it belonged to the district of Braunschweig .

Essinghausen has a joint local council with the neighboring district of Duttenstedt . The local mayor is Günter Schmidt.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a golden Braunschweiger lion pointing to the right on a golden base and underneath a silver gear wheel between two golden ears of corn on a blue shield. The lion indicates that the place used to belong to the Braunschweig district, the ears of corn stand for the agricultural and the cog wheel stands for the industrial character, for example for the rolling mill.

The coat of arms was adopted by the local council on February 6, 1974; the design was made by Werner Szews.

Culture and sights

  • The remains of an earlier castle complex can be found on the ditch south of the village.
  • The Essinghausen Chapel is in the eastern part of the village.
  • The forest area Woltorfer Holz extends southeast of the village . The forest area is a remnant of the formerly extensive northern forest that covered large parts of today's Lower Saxony between the cities of Braunschweig and Hanover until the late Middle Ages . The Woltorfer Holz has been a landscape protection area since 1967 .
  • "Wheat grains - germinating", 2000 - Hans-Oiseau Kalkmann , Jens Kalkmann. Multi-part sculpture made of sand-colored Bavarian granite and stainless steel. The sculpture shows three grains of wheat in different phases of germination and is reminiscent of the Peine / Essinghausen Feldmark, which was originally used for agriculture. Location: fork in the green area on the western edge of Essinghausen. Date of installation: July 13, 2000
