coat of arms
The coat of arms of Berkum shows a birch tree with three branches in alternating colors on a golden red shield. In the upper area, the red branches show floating leaves on a golden background. The lower surface forms a red hill in front of which two downward-pointing leaves and catkins can be seen. The hill symbolizes the Postechenberg, a post stop. The colors red and gold illustrate the former affiliation to the Hildesheim monastery .
The coat of arms was approved by the Interior Minister of Lower Saxony on January 21, 1952; the design was made by Rudolf Dehnke.
Culture and sights
The Protestant parish church in Berkum is a small, single-nave quarry stone building with a semicircular apse , the construction of which dates the construction time to the second half of the 13th century. The church was rebuilt between 1835 and 1838, which determines the current appearance. The Berkum bells "Anna and Kattrina" have been ringing since 1496.
