history

Woltorf was first mentioned in a document in 1090. However, the settlement of today's place took place much earlier.

Until the 1940s, Woltorf was a sovereignly divided village. The border between the Free State of Braunschweig and the Prussian province of Hanover ran through the village and divided it into a Braunschweig and a Prussian municipality. Only a reorganization of the national borders, as part of the so-called Salzgitter Act , ended the division on August 1, 1941 after many centuries.

Since March 1, 1974, the former independent municipality has been part of the city of Peine.

politics

The local council of Woltorf consists of nine councilors and councilors. It is composed as follows:

  • SPD: 5 seats
  • CDU: 3 seats
  • The Greens: 1 seat

René Laaf (SPD) has been the local mayor since 2006. He replaced Günter Vahldiek.

coat of arms

Coat of arms Woltorf.jpg

The coat of arms shows on a red shield a silver baptismal font on the edge of which an inscription can be seen above a stylized rune of life (ᛉ) . The baptismal font stands on a golden hill with three blue bars . It bears the year 1305 in the Latin inscription A [NNO] D [OMI] NI MCCCV and is a symbol for village life. The three bars symbolize the old ditches and ramparts of the land defense that existed on the edge of the Woltorfer wood. The blue-gold color in the hill shows the connection to the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , while red-gold stands for the Duchy of Hildesheim , as the rights of both sovereigns overlapped in Woltorf. The coat of arms was approved on January 5, 1961 by the President of the Hildesheim administrative district . The design comes from Alfred Brecht.

Culture and sights

  • The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady was built in the neo-Gothic style between 1852 and 1854 .
  • The primary school in Woltorf is part of the Schmedenstedt- Woltorf school network.
  • The building of the Woltorfer water tower characterizes the townscape as a landmark of the place. The system no longer serves as a water supply.
  • The Woltorfer Holz has been a landscape protection area since 1967 . The forest area is a remnant of the formerly extensive northern forest that covered large parts of today's Lower Saxony between the cities of Braunschweig and Hanover until the late Middle Ages .
  • A special feature is the traditional setting up of a large number of honor gates, which was once more widespread in Lower Saxony. For this purpose, the individual clubs move into the forest in the week before the festival, tie garlands as well as prefabricated posts and elements, their gate of honor with fresh green. This is followed by the setting up, which ends in a sociable way. In the week after the festival, these are dismantled and stored again. However, modern building guidelines and approval procedures are making this tradition increasingly difficult.

Economy and Infrastructure

The village has a primary school, a kindergarten, an Evangelical Lutheran parish, a retirement and nursing home run by the DRK , as well as numerous clubs and associations (including volunteer fire brigade , riding and driving club, sports club, choir, local association of the Kyffhäuserbund , folk festival community) .
