The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mantua ( lat. Dioecesis Mantuana , ital. Diocesi di Mantova ) is one in Italy located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Mantua .
history
The diocese was founded in 804. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the ecclesiastical province of the Patriarchate of Aquileia . In 1453 it was made at the request of the Gonzaga family , the dukes of Mantua immediately . Because the Gonzaga did not want to tolerate any ecclesiastical authorities in their domain, which in turn was under the rule of the Republic of Venice . In 1803 the diocese was subordinated to the ecclesiastical province of Ferrara . Since 1820 it has been subordinate to the Archdiocese of Milan as a suffragan .
