Ponte Vecchio di Dolceacqua
The Ponte Vecchio di Dolceacqua , also known as the Nervia Bridge, is an arch bridge in the Italian municipality of Dolceacqua , Imperia province , Liguria region , that spans the Nervia River.
The bridge connects the two districts of Terra and Borgo. The older district of Terra reached the limits of its expandability in the middle of the 14th century, as the space available on this side of the Nervia river had been used up. On the opposite side, the new Borgo district was built, which could be reached via the elegant bridge with a single arch spanning 32 meters.
The French painter Claude Monet was inspired by the picturesque sight of the bridge with the Castello dei Doria castle in the background for his painting "The Castle of Dolceacqua (1884)" ( Musée Marmottan Monet , Paris ). Monet described the bridge as a "jewel of lightness".
