Dolceacqua is an Italian municipality in the province of Imperia in Liguria with 2068 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The place is about 10 km north of Ventimiglia in the Val Nervia. The neighboring municipalities are Airole , Apricale , Breil-sur-Roya , Camporosso , Isolabona , Perinaldo , Rocchetta Nervina , San Biagio della Cima and Ventimiglia.
The village is dominated by the "Castello dei Doria". In 1270 the Counts of Ventimiglia sold the Dolceacqua castle and estate to Oberto Doria from Genoa, whose family owned it until 1942. During the War of the Austrian Succession , the castle was destroyed by French and Spanish troops in 1744; an earthquake in 1887 caused the ruins to collapse in part. The Doria took up residence in Palazzo Doria and Palazzo Doria Garoscio .
Another famous attraction is the bridge, which, although built in the middle of the 13th century, spans the Nervia river in a single arch (> 30 m): the Ponte Vecchio di Dolceacqua . Claude Monet was inspired to paint a painting by this bridge in 1884 . He called it a "jewel of lightness".
Around Dolceacqua also the only noteworthy is DOC - Red Wine Liguria grown - the Rossese di Dolceacqua .
