Pompeiana (in Ligurian : Pumpiàna ) is a northern Italian municipality with 859 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region .

geography

Flower market in Pompeiana

Pompeiana is two kilometers as the crow flies from the Ligurian Sea and is located on the south side of Monte Croce , a hill about 600 meters high. Due to the proximity to the sea, the orientation to the south and the protection by the hill, the community has a relatively mild climate.

The place consists of several, sometimes ancient, settlements that are located a short distance from each other. In recent history, the scattered housing estates were connected by new buildings and integrated into a more homogeneous cityscape. Nevertheless, a large number of the more ancient settlement centers are located in the periphery of the municipality. These include Conio in the east, Case Soprane and Barbarasa in the north and Belli and Furnu in the south.

To the west of the Torre dei Panei , a watchtower from the 16th century, lies the settlement of Costa Panera , which was abandoned after the devastating earthquake in 1831 and has been uninhabited since then.

Pompeiana belongs to the Comunità Montana Argentina Armea and is about 22 kilometers from the provincial capital Imperia .

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , the municipality was assigned to zone 2. This means that Pompeiana is in a seismically moderately to highly active zone.

history

Although the name of the municipality is probably derived from the Roman fundus Pompeiana , there are no documents from the time before the eleventh century that prove the existence of the place in the first millennium. The river, which is now called Santa Caterina , was mentioned in a document as fossato di Pompeiana (German: Graben von Pompeiana) because it served to limit the land that Adelheid von Susa ceded to the Benedictine monks of the Santo Stefano di Genova monastery. This donation was the cornerstone for the formation of the so-called Principato di Villaregia , to which Pompeiana did not initially belong, even if the Benedictines certainly exerted their influence. From 1153 on, the Bishop of Albenga received a tenth of the income generated by the land, including from Pompeiana.

Pompeiana came under the jurisdiction of the Benedictines of the Principality of Villaregia in 1225 and remained there until 1335, when the Benedictines sold the Principality to Lamba Doria because of numerous debts .

Between the years 1440 and 1798, Pompeiana was separated into Pompiana Superior (or Maior ) and Pompiana Inferior . The upper part fell under the feudal lords of the Quaranta , the lower village was part of the Podesteria di Taggia . In 1472 the rights to Pompiana Maior went to the Genoese Marquis Spinola .

On May 22, 1557, 25 people were captured in a pirate attack, 7 or 8 were killed, as were several workhorses. The pirates looted and pillaged and the area was also devastated by other raids during that time.

The establishment of a public school, which was open to all children of the community, emerges from a document of March 9, 1704.

climate

The municipality is classified under climate category D , since the degree day number has a value of 1566. This means that the heating period regulated by law in Italy is between November 1st and April 15th for 12 hours per day.
