Pietrabruna (in Ligurian : Priabrùna ) is a northern Italian municipality with 449 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region . Politically it belongs to the province of Imperia .

location

The car-free mountain village in the midst of olive groves and oak forests at the foot of Monte Follia is about five kilometers as the crow flies from the Mediterranean in a side valley southwest of Dolcedo , the Valle di San Lorenzo , and is less than ten kilometers away from the coastal town of San via the serpentine provincial road SP45 Lorenzo al Mare connected. The neighboring districts of Boscomare and Torre Paponi can be reached via the SP45 or small side streets. There is a bus connection to the place.

history

The village was only founded in the late Middle Ages. Owned by the Clavesana family , it was given to the then Lord of Lengueglia, Anselmo the Quaranta , in 1162 . The lords of Lengueglia were a noble family who ruled the mountain region from neighboring Lingueglietta . At the end of the 12th century, the village of Porto Maurizio was acquired as a fief . The residents of Porto Maurizio destroyed the originally fortified village and built a new settlement on today's higher position. In 1613 the place achieved its independence.

In the hamlet of Torre Paponi there is a memorial , designed by the architect Papone Bartolomeo in 1984, to commemorate the victims of the bombing of the place by the German Wehrmacht from December 14 to 16, 1944 as revenge for the shooting of a German Wehrmacht member near Imperia, who made the hamlet set on fire and killed 28 people.

Churches

Porto Maurizio had the Church of St. Matthew built, which is no longer preserved, as a classicist preacher's church, the only one of this style in a large area, was built in its place in 1844. Restorations meanwhile give it a baroque look. The church is shaped like a cross. Outside and below the village at today's cemetery is the Romanesque church of St. Gregory from the 12th century with Gothic portals. Also interesting in the village is the preacher's church of St. Mary, which belongs to an order of penitents , the order of white penitents . The church was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and has largely retained its appearance. On the facade there is a fresco by the painter Portorino Domenico Virenti .

geography

Pietrabruna, headquarters of the municipal administration, with the hamlets of Boscomare (south) and Torre Paponi (south-east), is located on the slopes of the 1149 meter high Monte Faudo . The typical Ligurian mountain village consists of characteristic streets and small squares in its historical center. Pietrabruna belongs to the Comunità Montana dell'Olivo and is about 17 kilometers from the provincial capital Imperia .

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , the municipality was assigned to zone 2. This means that Pietrabruna is located in a seismically moderately to strongly active zone.

climate

The municipality is classified under climate category D , as the degree day number has a value of 2093. This means that the heating period regulated by law in Italy is between November 1st and April 15th for 12 hours per day.

Trivia

The place is known for its specialty La Stroscia , a sweet short pastry that is still traditionally baked in town today, especially for the feast of St. Matthew. The surrounding olive groves are today, in addition to tourism , still a source of income for the residents and consist mainly of the local Ligurian Taggiasca olive .
