Triora (in Ligurian : Triêua ) is an Italian municipality with 350 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Imperia in Liguria . With an area of ​​67.74 square kilometers , it is the largest municipality in the province of Imperia.

Triora is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

geography

Triora is located in the Valle Argentina and, with its particularly extensive territory, belongs to the Comunità Montana Argentina Armea . The main town is 780 meters above sea level, on the southern slopes of a mountain ridge that drops from the Saccarella massif to the narrow valley of the Argentina river . Triora is about 47 kilometers from the provincial capital Imperia .

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , the municipality was assigned to zone 3. This means that Triora is in a seismically less active zone.

climate

Due to the elevated location and the relatively large distance to the Ligurian Sea , Triora has a moderate mountain climate , with pronounced temperature fluctuations during the day. Nevertheless, there are no massive degrees of cold in winter, as the village receives direct sunlight for a relatively long time and is not affected by the thermal inversion of the valleys. The high rock wall, which closes the Argentina valley in the north and is without exception over 2000 meters high, shields the zone against the north winds from the Po plain . These cause rain and snow in the nearby Val Tanaro .

The municipality is classified under climate category F , as the degree day number has a value of 3039. This means that Triora is not subject to the statutory heating period.
