Monte Saccarello

The Monte Saccarello is the highest mountain in the Italian region of Liguria . It is right on the border with France , the 2201 meter high peak already belongs to the Alpes-Maritimes department .

The mountain can be approached via a two-kilometer road that ends just below the summit. It branches off from the Ligurian border ridge road .

The famous Redeemer statue and a small chapel are located on the mountain .

Redeemer statue

The Redeemer statue, Il Cristo Redentore ("Christ the Redeemer") or Il Redentore ("The Redeemer") for short, stands at a height of 2164 meters . It is supposed to protect Liguria and the surrounding valleys.

Pope Leo XIII. decided in the encyclical of May 25, 1899 to dedicate the holy year 1900 to the heart of Jesus. For this purpose, statues of the Redeemer should be erected on twenty mountain peaks in Italy. In the Liguria region, Monte Saccarello was not only suitable for its height but also because of its proximity to the French border .

The statue was cast in Paris by the architect Giovanni Pachiaudi . It was brought to Ormea in the Tanaro Valley by train and transported from there to its current location with the help of the military . The statue was inaugurated with a mass on September 15, 1901. Over 6000 people took part in the consecration of A Protezione della Liguria et delle Valli Sottostanti (To protect Liguria and the surrounding valleys).

"Il Redentore" is one of the few of the planned 20 statues that were erected and have survived to this day.
