The Ligurian border ridge road (often abbreviated as LGKS , incorrectly shown on some maps as the Maritime Alps border ridge road; French Route du Marguareis ; Italian Alta via del Sale ) leads as a former military road along the border between France and Italy . Its length, which can be driven on loose ground, is 63 kilometers - from the Colla Melosa to the junction at Colle di Tenda. Much of the road is at altitudes over 2000 meters. The approximately 30 km long core section of the road is subject to tolls for motorized vehicles. The route is also closed to motorized traffic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cyclists and hikers do not have to pay tolls and can use the road all week. The road is open after the snowmelt in summer and autumn.

The Grenzkammstraße was used and maintained especially between the world wars in the Mussolini period. Numerous military forts, such as the Forte Centrale at the Tenda Pass from 1880, line the high alpine ridge road. Most of the high forts were built between 1880 and 1940. The road crosses the border several times. This fact, which is strange for a military road, can be explained by the fact that the border course in the region before 1947 was partly different than it is today.

The Ligurian border ridge road is a refuge of high recreational value, a high alpine route over 60 kilometers on which only a few people are on the move. Nature conservation demands to adhere to the rules of the Alpine protected area. Driving on the long, unpaved route away from human settlements places considerable physical and psychological demands on off-road vehicle tourists, but especially on enduro and mountain bike riders (average level of difficulty according to the Great Alpine Road Guide from Denzel-Verlag : SG 3-4 , sometimes SG 4-5 ).
