Spinola is the name of one of the noblest families of Genoa . The others are the Doria , Grimaldi , Malaspina , Negrone and Fieschi . In the middle of the 18th century they owned the duchies of St. Pierro, St. Angelo, Sesto, St. Severino and Los Balbazes.

The first known Spinola was Guido Spinola, who fought as a knight during the Crusades and was consul of Genoa several times (1102–1121). His sons Ansaldo and Oberto are the progenitors of the two main branches Luccoli and St.Luca.

A Spinola bought the city of Lucca for 30,000 guilders in 1340 . Antonio Spinola was appointed the first Genoese governor in Corsica in 1453.

Filippo Spinola, Marquese del Sesto e di Venafro (Benafro), (1559–1585), had three sons from his marriage to the Princess Policena of Salerno:

  • Fernando Spinola , Field Marshal General, fell in Holland in 1603
  • Federico Spinola († May 26, 1603), royal Spanish admiral, died trying to break through the Dutch blockade of Sluis .
  • Ambrosio Spinola (1569–1630), Spanish Field Marshal General, who became known for the fortunate siege of Breda, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece , 1 ° marqués de Los Balbazes, Governor of Milan, Privy Council of State and War.

The title Duke of San Pietro in Galatina (Spanish: Duque de San Pedro de Galatino ) was bestowed on Giovanni Battista Spinola by Philip IV in the Kingdom of Naples in 1621 . Together with the title Principe di Molfetta , it fell in 1801 to Don Carlo Gallarati Scotti , 6th Marchese di Cerano (1775-1840).

The title Duke of Giove , originally from the Mattei family , after their extinction in 1801 by the Antici Mattei, fell to Spinola through Donna Anna Maria (1922–1999), daughter of the last Duke Guido from the Antici Mattei family; her grandson is Don Filippo, Marchese Spinola, Duca di Giove (* 1981).
