Massimiliano Spinola (born July 10, 1780 in Pézenas , † November 12, 1857 in Tassarolo ) was an Italian entomologist .

Life

His first name is also written Maximilian, Maximilien. He was Count of Tassarolo and Senator of the Kingdom of Sardinia (Regno Sardo, from 1848).

The Marquis Spinola came from the prestigious and wealthy Spinola family of Genoa and was born in France. In 1789 his family moved to Paris, but fled to Genoa after the outbreak of the French Revolution. Much of their wealth came from land holdings in Spain and South America, from which Spinola received many insects. In 1833 he was imprisoned for political reasons at the fortress of Alessandria and afterwards for a time under surveillance at Tassarolo Castle. In 1841 he attended the third meeting of Italian scientists in Florence, became vice-president of the zoology section at the meeting the following year in Padua and also attended the 8th meeting in Genoa in 1846, but at that time he was already too sick to actively participate. Most recently he was practically blind and lived in Tassarolo. He died after a stroke after an operation on his eye.

He published 53 articles in entomology but also, for example, on the fish in the Gulf of Genoa. His first entomological work appeared in 1805, his last in 1854 (the majority of the work is from 1834 to 1851). In 1847 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

He dealt mainly with beetles, hymenoptera and Schnabelkerfen. His collection is in the Natural History Museums of Turin and Pisa. He was married twice. From his first marriage (1801) with Clelia Durazzo he had a son Agostino. His wife died of tuberculosis in 1803. In 1806 he married his cousin Maria Giulia Spinola, with whom he had three sons and three daughters. His second wife died in 1822.
