Breil-sur-Roya ( Italian: Breglio , Occitan: Brelh de Ròia ) is a commune in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes . It is located in the Maritime Alps at an altitude of 350  m on the Roya River , near the border with Italy and around 20 kilometers from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Breil-sur-Roya has 2158 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

The Roya River is dammed up here to generate electricity and forms a small lake on the west side of the village.

Until 1860 the place was called Breglio and belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia , until this ceded the county of Nice together with Savoy to France. Until 1860 the predominant lingua franca was Italian; then an aggressive Frenchization typical of France took hold .

In Breil-sur-Roya, the hub station is located between the two branches of the Tendabahn . The road to the Tendapass also leads through the village . Breil-sur-Roya is a stage on the GR 52A long-distance hiking trail , the Sentier Panoramique du Mercantour , and the Via Alpina .
