Beuil

Beuil (until 1860 Boglio , in the local dialect Buèi ) is a French commune of 525 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; it belongs to the canton of Vence within the Arrondissement of Nice .

geography

Beuil is 78 kilometers from Nice , at the end of the Gorges du Cians gorges formed by the Cians river , at an altitude of 1,450 meters, on the edge of the Mercantour National Park . Together with its districts of Les Launes and Valberg (part of the municipality of Péone ), Beuil forms a ski area that is one of the major winter sports resorts in the Maritime Alps .

history

Beuil attracted the attention of the Romans early on as a fortified place. As Castrum Boliacum it served from now on to secure the Roman road in Cimiez (above Nice) with Italy .

In 1258 Beuil revolted against his powerful lord Guillaume Rostaing. His only daughter was married to Andaron Grimaldi, a member of the Genoese patrician family of the Grimaldi , whose line in Bueil now ruled one of the largest fiefs in Provence , and over time they became barons and counts. Jean Grimaldi de Bueil became Seneschal of Provence, and his family often became governors of the Dukes of Savoy in the county of Nice . Annibal Grimaldi de Beuil, whose military talent had saved the Crown of Savoy, rebelled against the duke without having sufficient reassurance. He was executed and his property was confiscated. Beuil Castle was razed in 1633 .

In Turin , Count Mattei sold his rights to Beuil to the residents, who in turn resold them for 6125 Louis d'or .

During the Napoleonic occupation, Beuil, like the entire county of Nice, belonged to France for a short time from 1793 to 1815, then fell back to the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont and was only ceded to France in 1860.
