Cap-d'Ail ( French garlic cape ) is a French commune on the Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur and is a border town to the Principality of Monaco with 4594 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

Cap-d'Ail is located at the foot of the steep Tête de Chien mountain near La Turbie .

history

The place did not develop until the end of the 19th century. The two natural beaches, Mala and Marquet, located in bays, favored tourism and the proximity to Monaco made Cap-d'Ail a popular place to live. Numerous villas in the Belle Epoque style with spacious Mediterranean gardens were built in the first half of the 20th century. Famous guests were Greta Garbo , Sacha Guitry , Winston Churchill and Edouard Herriot .

Leisure and Tourism

The view of the village, the sea and the mountains can be enjoyed via two well-developed hiking trails along the coast at different heights.

traffic

The lower coastal road (Basse Corniche ) RD6098 (before 1933 RN7 A from 1933 to 1973 RN559 and then until 2006 RN98 ) runs through the village . A connecting road leads to the middle Corniche and La Turbie. Cap-d'Ail is connected to the Marseille-Ventimiglia railway line by a train station .

Honorary citizen

  • Winston Churchill (1874–1965), former British Prime Minister, often spent his holidays in Cap-d'Ail after 1945; he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Cap-d'Ail
