Saorge

Saorge (Italian Saorgio ) is a French commune in the Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nice and the Canton of Contes . The inhabitants call themselves Saorgiens .

geography

The community is located in the French Maritime Alps . Saorge is bordered by Fontan to the north, La Brigue to the northeast, Italy to the east, Breil-sur-Roya to the south, La Bollène-Vésubie and Belvédère to the west and Tende to the northwest .

Coming from Tende , the Roya river crosses Saorge and then flows on to Fontan . These localities are located in the border area with Italy and on the Tendabahn , which is used by the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato .

history

The region belonged to the county of Nice. Between 1388 and 1860, Saorge was part of Sardinia-Piedmont until it fell to France. In June 1793 the armies of the First French Republic and Sardinia met. In the first battle of Saorge (June 8 to 12, 1793) France was defeated; In the second battle of Saorge from April 24 to 28, 1794, France was victorious and the French wrested the city from Piedmont. After Napoleon's exile, the place fell back to Sardinia-Piedmont.
