Pierrefeu is a French commune in the Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nice and the Canton of Vence .
geography
The community is located in the French Maritime Alps . It borders in the north on Villars-sur-Var , in the north-east on Malaussène , in the east on Toudon , in the south-east on Les Ferres , in the south-west on Conségudes and Roquestéron , in the west on Cuébris and in the northwest on Ascros . In the south, the Estéron forms the municipal boundary .
Sub-locations
Pierrefeu consists of the old place of origin, which is called Vieux Pierrefeu, and the main town, a loosely built street settlement, which is below Viex Pierrefeu. Viex Pierrfeu was only partially inhabited in the 1960s. The houses fell into disrepair. In the following years, the real estate, some of which dates back to the Middle Ages, was renovated by artists and holiday home owners who settled here. Vieux Pierrefeu is not accessible by car, which gives the picturesque place a special charm. There are two parking spaces on site.
The "main town" is a street village along the last steep section of the kilometer-long road from Gilette to Viex Pierrfeu.
Place name
Literally translated, Pierrefeu means "flint". The place name is probably derived from a Roman signal box on the high Pierrefeu. From there, fire signals were passed on as part of a Roman communication network on the mountain heights. The place is mentioned in the eleventh century as "Petrofocus".
