Levens is a French municipality with 4738 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Nice and the canton of Tourrette-Levens . It is a member of the Métropole Nice Côte d'Azur municipal association .

geography

Levens is located about 25 kilometers north of Nice at an altitude of about 600 meters, above the confluence of the Estéron , Vésubie and Var rivers .

history

Levens was the center of the Ligurian tribe of the Leponti ; from this name Leventi developed in the time of the Romans and Leventio in the Middle Ages. The place was on the way from Cimiez (today a district of Nice) to Saint-Martin- Lantosque , its center is now the former castle of the Counts of Provence .

The Knights Templar established the Commanderie Notre-Dame-des-Prés in Levens after 1135, they were arrested on January 20, 1307 on the orders of Charles of Anjou . From the end of the 14th century Levens was separated from Provence and shared the fate of the county of Nice . The place came under the rule of the Grimaldi family .
