Meerdorf is a district of the municipality Wendeburg in the district of Peine , Lower Saxony .
geography
The place is between Braunschweig and Hanover , about six kilometers east of Peine . The A 2 motorway runs around one kilometer south of the town center.
history
The first documentary mention comes from the year 1146. Later Meerdorf was the seat of the bailiff of the Cistercian monastery Riddagshausen .
On March 1, 1974, Meerdorf was incorporated into the Wendeburg community.
coat of arms
Meerdorf is not by the sea; but the place name, documented in 1146 as “Meredorp”, has something to do with a body of water, with a water-filled depression. A pond in the local area was called "the sea", and that is why the blue sea in the shield base translates the place name "talking". The wings are reminiscent of the Meerdorf windmills. Two are known, the last stretching its wings in the wind at a location west of the town until 1921. The other was on the Mühlenberg, which is still marked on maps today. The blue-yellow shield colors are reminiscent of centuries of belonging to the state of Braunschweig and, on the other hand, of the Braunschweig district, to which Meerdorf belonged as an independent municipality until the territorial reform in 1974, before it became part of the Wendeburg municipality in the Peine district. The local council adopted the coat of arms on March 22, 1982. Design: Arnold Rabbow.
Club life
There is the volunteer fire brigade and other voluntary organizations, associations and groups.
Culture
Meerdorf is known, among other things, for the cabaret theater " Teatr dach ".
public events
Folk festival
Every year in summer, Meerdorf organizes its folk festival (formerly Schützenfest). This is where the kings who were previously expelled are proclaimed. The proclamation takes place on Sunday morning at the king's breakfast. The festival is organized by the Meerdorfer Volksfestgemeinschaft (formerly the Meerdorf Young Society). As is usual at public festivals, a few rides as well as shooting and lottery booths are set up.
Easter fire
Every year on Holy Saturday, the Meerdorf Young Society organizes an Easter bonfire on the Meerdorf Mühlenberg. Before that, everyone in Meerdorf can hand over their shrubbery. After Christmas, a Christmas tree acceptance takes place in anticipation of the Easter fire, where the Meerdorfers can hand in their disused conifers.
Rag ball
At the beginning of February, the Meerdorf young company organizes the so-called rag ball, a carnival event to which everyone is welcome - but only in disguise. The young society Meerdorf and the “Meerdorfer Torfmoorhexen” take care of the program (sketches etc.).
