Hermann (Hildesheim)

Hermann († 1170 ) was the 22nd bishop of Hildesheim from probably 1162 to 1170.

The name Hermann comes from Old High German and means the army man .

The Diocese of Hildesheim was severely devastated under Bishop Hermann. On the other hand, Bishop Hermann rendered outstanding services to the founding and further development of the Cistercian monasteries in Loccum and Amelungsborn . In 1163 he enabled the establishment of the Loccum monastery . On August 25, 1166, the bishop gave permission to build a chapel in Hemmendorf . It is the founding date of today's Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Vitus . An event around 1169 also shows the bishop's bond with Salzhemmendorf. In 1169 the bishop donated the tithe to the Amelungsborn monastery at the salt works near Hemmdorf.
