history

The Gesche Koellarsweg commemorates the execution of the farmer's wife as a witch in Loccum

The origin of the name Loccum is seen in the name Lucca . There was a noble family from Lucca, builders of the Luccaburg . The origin of the name could be in Slavic, where Lucca can be interpreted as an expression for German 'meadow'. It is believed that Slavic-speaking Wends settled here in the Saxon settlement area around the 8th century .

  • Significant importance was the place because of the 1163 by monks of the Cistercian Order , founded the monastery , which developed in the following centuries one of the most important spiritual centers in northern Germany.
  • In Loccum, about 33 people were executed in witch trials between 1581 and 1661 , mostly women. The first victim of the witch hunts was Magdalene bey der Koppeln in 1628, one of the other trials was against Gesche Köllers . Most of the convicts were burned on the "Rosenbraken", a piece of land between Klosterforst and Bundesstraße 441. In Loccum tradition, the small pond on the slope above Bachteich and Fulde is known as the so-called witch's pond, where the water samples supposedly took place. On September 25, 2013, the City Council of Rehburg-Loccum passed a resolution on the socio-ethical rehabilitation of the victims of the witch trials.
  • A school was first mentioned in 1593. The monastery had set it up and housed it in the former women's chapel. The children were taught in this building until a new school was built in 1963.
  • From 1936 to 1945 there was a tank farm ( Lufttanklager Loccum ) of the Luftwaffe in Loccum-Heide , which was blown up by the British at the end of the Second World War. Remnants can still be seen today in the Loccumer Heide. The former barracks , which was used until the beginning of the 1990s, is now an industrial park. Among other things, dinosaur models are built there and are exhibited in the Münchehagen Dinosaur Park . A large part of the area still belongs to the Bundeswehr, and exercises are still regularly held there.
  • From December 1898 to the summer of 1936 Loccum was connected to the Steinhuder Meer Railway , which ran from Wunstorf to Uchte .
  • From 1921 to the early 1980s, Loccum was also connected to the network of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and Deutsche Bundesbahn ( railway line Stadthagen – Stolzenau ). The route led from Leese via Loccum and Münchehagen on towards Wiedensahl to Stadthagen . The routes and old railway embankments can still be seen in aerial photographs today. The former station building now serves as a residential building.
  • On March 19, 1955, a state church treaty for the state of Lower Saxony was signed in the Loccum monastery . ( Loccumer contract )
