The small settlement in the Rehburg Mountains was first mentioned in 1690 when the effectiveness of its medicinal springs became known. The settlement, also known as Rehburger Brunnen, initially belonged to the town of Rehburg and later became independent.

In the hundred years from 1750 to 1850, the health resort known as " Madeira of the North" drew the nobility of the Kingdom of Hanover to Bad Rehburg. During this time, the Bad Rehburg spa facilities with bath house , fountain house, foyer, spa hotels and the Friederiken chapel (1841/42) as well as the spa gardens were built . After the spa facilities were used, among other things, as a nursing home and orphanages in the 20th century , they fell into disrepair since the 1970s. At the end of the 20th century, the entire area was barely accessible because it was almost completely overgrown. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was decided to wake up the spa facilities from their “slumber” and to renovate them. The opening ceremony took place in January 2003. In addition to Hofgeismar, Bad Rehburg has the only remaining bathing ensemble in Germany from the Romantic era .

On March 1, 1974, the municipality of Bad Rehburg was incorporated into the new town of Rehburg-Loccum.

In 1990 the place celebrated an elaborate 300th anniversary.
