geography

Geographical location

The place is located between the Dümmer Nature Park and the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park on the Great Moor, roughly in the middle between Sulingen and Minden on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia . The municipality is the administrative seat of the joint municipality Uchte with the spots Diepenau and Uchte and the municipalities Raddestorf and Warmsen .

Community structure

The districts of Hoysinghausen , Darlaten, Höfen, Lohhof and Woltringhausen belong to Flecken Uchte .

history

Uchte was first mentioned in a document in 1196 in the Hoya document book. In 1295 the Counts of Hoya built a castle in the village as a border castle against the diocese of Minden . In 1382 the Minden bishop conquered Uchte together with Count Otten von Schaumburg and destroyed the castle. Outside the village they built a new castle. Around 1400 Uchte fell back to the Counts of Hoya by conquest, who built another castle. The disputes lasted until the end of the 16th century. In 1521 the Uchte, which at that time comprised around 50 households, fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse .

In a major fire in 1726, 119 houses and the church were destroyed. 1806 Uchte was French and assigned as Canton Uchte to the department of Oberems with its seat in Osnabrück. After the French occupation, the Congress of Vienna decided in 1814 to annex the Amt Uchte to the Kingdom of Hanover . In another major fire in 1817, 58 houses burned down.

In 1898 the Steinhuder Meer Railway and the Minden - Uchte railway line went into operation. From 1932 Uchte belongs to the district of Nienburg.

For centuries, peat was cut by hand in the large moor west of the village , which the population used as fuel. Industrial peat mining began in the 1920s, leading to the establishment of three peat mining companies. Today (2011) only one company is active in the moor, which has been a nature reserve since 2007.

From 2005 the place became known nationwide through the girl from the Uchter Moor , who was called Moora in retrospect . It is a well-preserved, about 2,650 years old bog body , whose remains were found in 2000 and 2005 when peat in Großenmoor.

In Uchte, ExxonMobil produces natural gas (so-called sour gas). A slight earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 on August 16, 2018 with the center in neighboring Stolzenau is possibly related to the production .

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the communities Darlaten, Höfen, Hoysinghausen, Lohhof and Woltringhausen were incorporated.
