Location of the nature park in Germany

The Dümmer Nature Park is located in the Lower Saxony districts of Osnabrück , Diepholz , Vechta and the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke . An average of 34 km northeast of Osnabrück it lies between Drentwede and Bohmte , and between Bersenbrück and Rahden .

The 1123 km² nature park, through which the Weser-Ems watershed runs from north to south , includes the Dammer Mountains , the Dümmer (probably the heart of the nature park), the Stemweder Berg , numerous moor areas (e.g. . the "Great Moor" and the Oppenweher Moor ) and the nature reserves " Dümmer " and " Westliche Dümmerniederung ". It is supported by the “Naturpark Dümmer e. V. ”based in Diepholz. Four districts and 16 parishes are members of this association. The purposes of the association are primarily in the areas of tourism promotion and landscape conservation.

The Dümmer Nature Park and especially the Dümmer is a breeding and resting place for numerous migratory birds . Numerous moats run through the park area, through which the Hunte also flows. The extensive raised bogs have a unique flora and fauna. Finds from the Neolithic indicate that people were attracted to the fertile soils and biodiversity in prehistoric times and even lived here.

The Borringhauser Moor wind farm is located within the nature park in the west of the Dümmers . An expansion of the wind farm to the south is currently planned. In the course of this expansion, the old systems are to be replaced by new, approx. 200 meter high wind turbines. Conservationists see this extension as extremely critical, as the required safety distances of 1000 m to the NATURA 2000 area Dümmer would not be maintained and train corridors would be impaired. In addition, the extension areas are important resting and grazing areas for birds. The NABU (Vechta district group) has detailed its concerns in a letter to the city of Damme. Last but not least, the significantly higher systems are likely to have an impact on the landscape of the nature park, which is mainly determined by large areas of moorland and meadows.

NABU is equally critical of the construction of the “Marissa Park” on the site of the former Schoddenhof on Lembruch's Dümmerufer. A holiday park complex with 478 holiday homes and apartments with 4,000 guest beds in the final stage is to be built there on an area of 18 hectares by 2021. In addition to the previous visitors to the Dümmer in the neighboring districts of Lower Saxony, in Bremen and north-eastern Westphalia, the new facility is intended to provide guests from the Rhine-Ruhr area, from more distant parts of northern Germany, but also from neighboring countries and Scandinavian countries for a stay at Dümmer can be advertised.

Bend Averbeck, chairman of NABU Dümmer, criticizes that the pressure on protected areas will increase. Water sports enthusiasts could drive away the birds, and hikers could penetrate the breeding and resting areas. The landscape is "completely devalued". The "huge facility" with four-story buildings also looks ugly. It is questionable whether the expected masses of tourists really come to the dumber. Averbeck points to failed tourism investments in the past and vacancies. Those who are really interested in nature do not want to “move into such a ghetto”.
