The Steinhuder Meer nature park , with the Steinhuder Meer as its core, extends over an area of around 420 km² in the districts of Nienburg / Weser and Schaumburg and in the Hanover region . The latter is responsible for the nature park founded in 1974 .
Geographical location
The Steinhuder Meer Nature Park is located south of Nienburg / Weser , west of Neustadt am Rübenberge , northwest of Wunstorf , north of Hagenburg and Sachsenhagen and east of Rehburg-Loccum , parts of which are also within the park. In the center of the nature park lies the Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in northwest Germany . In its northern part is the Grinderwald , in its eastern part the Dead Moor , its southwest is bounded by the Rehburg Mountains , and in the northwest lies the Schneerener Moor .
description
Over 10% of the nature park is under nature protection and over 65% under landscape protection . The Steinhuder Meer , almost 30 km² in size and only 1.5 m deep on average, is a wetland of international importance and is a breeding, wintering and migration area for many wading and water bird species. The wet meadows in the vicinity of the lake also play an important role. Numerous rare animal and plant species are also at home in the partially still intact or recultivated moor areas .
Due to the wide range of leisure options in a charming landscape, such as cycling, hiking, swimming, sailing and surfing, up to 50,000 day visitors visit the nature park on summer weekends.
The places Steinhude and Mardorf benefit much more than Rehburg , Winzlar , Hagenburg or Großenheidorn . Places bordering the lake have received restrictions imposed by nature conservation. The height of the water level, the desludging and weeding of the lake, the development of the shore area and the management of the tourist flow hold plenty of potential for conflict. The restrictions on surfing, sailing and hiking opportunities in favor of the requirement of a bird sanctuary of international rank are just as conflicted. The nature park has already received several awards for the exemplary solution to these conflicts of interest between nature conservation and tourism.
