Steinhude is located on the south bank of the Steinhuder Meer. In the east, the fishing village has grown together with its neighboring village of Großenheidorn . In the south are the federal highway 441 and a small forest, the Hohenholz. Another prominent point in the south is the approx. 140 m high potash heap near Bokeloh . Steinhude is connected to its western neighbor Hagenburg by the 1.5 km long promenade .

history

The shore area of the Steinhuder Meer has been settled since prehistoric times. At the end of the 13th century Steinhude was first mentioned as "Stenhuthe".

To the north of Steinhude, Kranenburg Castle was built in the early 14th century , and since 1602 it has sunk into the Steinhuder Meer due to the rising water level . The structural remains are now in the lake at a water depth of 0.5 and 1.5 meters not far from the village.

In 1641, the fishing village was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The small settlement was living from agriculture and fishing and was in the 17th century to a spot community . In the 18th century, linen weaving became the most important industry. Before the middle of the 18th century there was a chocolate factory in Steinhude, one of the first in Germany.

Belonging to the office of Hagenburg , Steinhude was ruled by the Counts of Schaumburg . After the division of the county, Steinhude became part of the county of Schaumburg-Lippe in 1640 .

In the period from 1761 to 1767, Count Wilhelm I zu Schaumburg-Lippe had the Wilhelmstein Fortress built on an artificially raised island.

From 1898 to 1964 the Steinhuder Meer-Bahn offered passenger transport to its station in Steinhude, until 1970 it still offered freight transport. Their tracks have now been dismantled. The railway company remained as the operator of local public transport buses.

It was not until the 20th century that the small village began to develop into a tourist resort. The influx of expellees after the Second World War , increasing tourism and a modest economic boom led to a significant expansion of the place.

After the Second World War from 1945 onwards, there were several major interventions in the townscape and landscape. Another artificial island, the 35,000 m² bathing island , was created in 1975. A dam was built between Steinhude and Hagenburg and turned into a promenade. Until 1964, the Steinhuder Meer-Bahn (StMB), a narrow-gauge railway from Wunstorf to Uchte, ran through Steinhude.

The Schaumburger Flecken Steinhude was incorporated into Wunstorf on March 1, 1974 as part of the regional reform . Wunstorf moved to the district of Hanover , which became part of the Hanover region on November 1, 2001 .

religion

The ev.-luth. Parish with the Petruskirche belongs to the state church Schaumburg-Lippe .

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Hedwig is named after Hedwig von Andechs . It was built in 1980 on Schlesierweg instead of a previous church from the 1950s. Since 2008 she has been part of the parish of St. Bonifatius in Wunstorf.

The New Apostolic congregation Steinhude was founded in 1931. In 1985 a new church was inaugurated at Grossenheidorner Straße 82 for the larger congregation. In 2009 the Steinhude congregation was affiliated to the Wunstorf congregation, and since then there have been no New Apostolic divine services in Steinhude.

politics

After the local elections in 2016, the nine seats of the Steinhude local council were divided with three for the SPD, three for the CDU, two for non-attached parties and one for the AfD.

The local mayor is Wilhelm Bredthauer (SPD).

coat of arms

Former coat of arms

Description : In red, a silver nettle leaf with a golden knob in the middle and a slanted silver fish.

Meaning: The silver nettle leaf in a red shield was used by the Counts of Schaumburg as a coat of arms since the 12th century . The fish is a symbol of the former importance of Steinhude as a fishing village.

In the past, the two symbols were displayed together on one sign, now on their own sign. Today's depiction is based on the depiction in the oldest known seal from the 17th century, where two shields connected by baroque tendrils stand side by side, one with the nettle leaf, the other with the fish.

There is also a coat of arms that only contains the fish symbol.

  • On the edge of the former fishing village is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Peter , a simple, unplastered quarry stone building with rectangular windows. This was started in 1804. After a long break in construction, it was only inaugurated in 1854. A square bell tower with a pointed helmet rises above the west facade . The interior presents itself as a hall with a barrel vault . Only remnants of the simple classical furnishings have been preserved. The oldest piece of equipment is the offering box from 1614. The crucified Jesus was created by Ernst Weber.
  • The Paula windmill was built in Braunschweig in 1863 and has replaced a windmill that was built in Steinhude in 1670 and destroyed in a lightning strike since 1911.
  • In the center of the town, which is heavily influenced by tourism, only a few older half-timbered houses have survived , thanks to numerous demolitions and extensive renovations , such as at Neuer Winkel (No. 5, 7, 9, 10, 13) and in Achternümme . The former rectory on Graf-Wilhelm-Strasse (No. 17) is a two-story half-timbered building with a half- hipped roof . It was built in 1751 and later expanded with modern additions.
  • The Scheunenviertel dates back to 1756. For reasons of fire protection it was built outside of the historic town center. The barns border a triangular square on two sides that was previously used for threshing and has been used for festive events since 1871. When the barns were not used and the buildings became increasingly dilapidated, some were demolished. As part of a revitalization project of Expo 2000 , the barns were renovated from 1997 and a few here offset supplemented buildings, which, however, are characterized by site atypical features.
  • Today's "beach terraces" were built in 1899 as a "beach hotel". It burned down in 1946 and was rebuilt in 1954 without a hotel. In 1968 the “Klabautermann” beach hall, known for live music, was demolished by the fire brigade. After changing ownership conditions, it was reopened in 1997 as a "beach terrace".
