St. Hedwig, Steinhude

St. Hedwig is the Catholic church in Steinhude , town of Wunstorf in the Hanover region .

After there were only a few Catholics on the south bank of the Steinhuder Meer from the Reformation to the Second World War , the expulsion from the East after the war in 1947 led to the formation of a local community in Steinhude, which also included the surrounding villages. For them, after a temporary barracks, a small church was built in 1952/53 with the patronage of St. Hedwig , the patroness of Silesia . When this church, located at Schlesierweg 10, no longer served its purpose in the 1970s, it was replaced by a new building on the same property in 1979/80, which also offers holidaymakers a place to reflect. The foundation stone was laid in 1979 , and the new church was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen on March 22, 1980 . On December 1st, 1981 the parish of St. Hedwig was established, since September 1st, 2008 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Bonifatius with its seat in Wunstorf.

The St. Hedwig's Church was designed by Wolfgang Rauck , Hanover. The interior design comes from Hanns Joachim Klug . The church has an approximately triangular floor plan. The roof rises steeply from the southern broadside to the northern tip. Here, at the highest point, is a cross of thorns. Inside is the altar at this point, to which the benches are arranged in a fan shape. Wide motif glass window bands in white and blue tones give the room light. The organ was built in 1992 by E. Kaminski from Warsaw . A free-standing column tower, which only slightly towers above the church, contains the four bells of the peal.
