history

St. Gangolf Church

At the end of the 11th century, a castle was built in the area of the municipality of Wietzen, district Stumpenhusen, but nothing has survived today. The castle hill in the Stumpenhusen district, still recognizable as a moth in the 19th century, was about 40 m in diameter and was completely leveled. The noble lords sat here until 1204, from 1181 Counts of Stumpenhusen , ancestors of the Counts of Hoya , to whom ownership passed through the Counts of Wölpe after 1301, which means Wietzen lost its historical importance. The construction of the remarkable St. Gangolf Church , which still exists today, goes back to this aristocratic seat in the 12th century.

Incorporations

In the course of the territorial and administrative reform, the municipality of Wietzen joined the Samtgemeinde Marklohe on April 1, 1970. On March 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Holte was incorporated into the municipality of Wietzen.

Village culture circle Wietzen : The rural youth Wietzen and the local mixed choir founded the village culture circle Wietzen in 1962. Their concern was the use of an open-air stage to care for and preserve old local and rural cultural assets through choir singing and folk dancing.

Today the village culture group organizes the lecture series "Wietzen - as it used to be", reports in Low German about life in the old days and presents the emergence and development of Wietzen businesses. Every year several hikes are offered in the village of Wietzen and Holte and around.
