About this picture

Hassel (Weser) is a municipality in the Nienburg / Weser district in Lower Saxony . It is part of the County Hoya community .

geography

Geographical location

Hassel is located between the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park and the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, roughly halfway between Bremen and Hanover on the Weser . The place lies in the Wesermarsch on a Geestrücke , which has already protected Hassel from some floods of the Weser.

Expansion of the municipal area

North of Hassel borders Barme -Drübber and thus the district of Verden , whereby the Jübber district is still part of Hassel. Rübeland, Heidhüsen and parts of the Hämelheide also belong to the village and border on Dörverden , also the district of Verden. While the municipal areas are bounded in the south by Eystrup and Hämelhausen , the place includes the nature reserve Alhuser Ahe and only meets the associated city limits east of Hoya am Wiedesee. Another property of the municipality of Hassel is the Hasseler Bruch north of the Hämelsee .

history

Origin of the place name

Old names of the place are around 1091 Hasela, 1265 Hasle, around 1270 Haslo and around 1359 Haßle.

Middle Low German hasel / hassel = hazel bush; since both names contain the old -loh. So they mean (settlement) with hazel trees. The Marktfelder Pastor Twele wrote in 1906: “It is noted that the name Hassel occurs frequently. The Hassel, that was the name of all the places of justice after their enclosure formed by hazel bars; So it would also be possible that Hassel - Twele is referring here to Hassel bei Hoya - would have been such a court of law, such as the Hassel bei Lühnde, not far from Hanover. This presumption is all the more confirmed by the fact that in later times there was a place of execution for criminals near Hassel. ”The words should perhaps be supplemented by the reference that in the Middle Ages the hazel rod served as a judge's staff, and by the memory of the old saying: “Break the baton over someone”.

coat of arms

Description: A silver crane neck with a golden beak is shown between golden scales on a green background . On the left above the scales you can see a golden hazelnut in a silver fruit cup , while on the right you can see a silver rose with golden clusters .

Reason: The name Hassel is derived from the hazel bush (because Hassel was previously called Hasel), which was consecrated to the god Wotan in Germanic times and suggests the existence of such bushes in the Hassel area in the past. The scales symbolize Hassel's execution site " Poena Talionis " (on the L330 in the direction of Hoya at the local exit), which was executed until 1846 and lasted for centuries. The rose and the crane in the coat of arms go back to a gentry family (Knight Ludolf von Hassel was called in 1219), who resided in this place for a long time.
