Derek Mahon (born November 23, 1941 in Belfast , † October 1, 2020 in Kinsale ) was an Irish poet .

Life

In addition to his lyrical works, Mahon is also known for translations from French and as a screenwriter . In the English-speaking world and especially in Ireland he is best known for his poem A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford , a meditation on u a. the being forgotten, the peripheral, the suppressed and the everyday. This poem is partly treated in schools and universities and can also be found in many anthologies . In 2007 he was awarded the David Cohen Prize for Lifetime Achievement.

Mahon lived in Dublin . He died in the early autumn of 2020 at the age of 78; A final volume of Mahon poetry entitled Washing Up has been announced for October 2020 .
