Köchingen is a village in the Bodenstedt-Liedingen-Köchingen district of Vechelde in the Peine district in Lower Saxony .

history

Köchingen was first mentioned in the 12th century as "Cochigghe", later around 1200 as "Cogginge" when the village became the property of the Wolfenbüttel line of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg after disputes between the heirs of Heinrich the Lion and the Bishop of Hildesheim came.

With the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Köchingen was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia created by Napoleon in 1807 . After its dissolution in 1813, the place belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig until 1918 . In 1847 Köchingen had 317 inhabitants in 39 fireplaces.

Köchingen's assignment to the Braunschweig district and its status as an independent municipality ended in 1974 as part of the regional reform of Lower Saxony . Since March 1, 1974, Köchingen has belonged to the municipality of Vechelde and, together with Liedingen and Bodenstedt, forms a village with a joint local council.

Village image and local development

Köchingen was an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century. Except for a few modern single-family houses, the village has retained its rural character.

In terms of the structure of employment, agriculture is only of minor importance today. In the last few years several riding stables have emerged in the village, which have made Köchingen a center of equestrian sports in the region . Many of the residents of the village do their jobs mainly in the regional center of Braunschweig or in the nearby industrial area in the Salzgitter area .

coat of arms

Coat of arms Köchingen (Vechelde) (ngw.nl) .jpg

The coat of arms shows a blue flax blossom on a golden shield, which is framed by an open-topped horseshoe. The blue flower is reminiscent of the flax cultivation that was practiced here until the 1950s. The blue horseshoe stands for the horse as a loyal helper in agriculture as well as for horse breeding and as a symbol for the riding and jumping tournaments held here in the Peine district. In addition, it is popularly used as a symbol of hope for a good development of the place. The blue-gold color confirms the affiliation to the former state of Braunschweig.

The coat of arms was adopted on April 13, 1983 by the local council for Köchingen. The design comes from Arnold Rabbow.

nature

In the east of the village are the clarification ponds of the former Wierthe sugar factory . These tailings ponds, which became useless when the sugar factory closed in 2005, have been transformed into a biotope since they were closed. Ornithologists estimate that around 200 species of birds can be seen in the clearing ponds. The clarification ponds are owned by the Kulturlandpflege Foundation , which wants to ensure the water supply for the pond areas important for breeding and resting birds via a well.

Around 1850 a breeding record of the steppe consecration could be provided near Köchingen . Several birds this year and an older female were shot. This is a peculiarity in that there were only very few broods of this species in Germany.
