Urs N. Glutz from Blotzheim

Urs Noel Glutz von Blotzheim (born December 18, 1932 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss zoologist who is best known for his ornithological works. Glutz von Blotzheim is professor emeritus at the University of Bern , honorary doctorate from the University of Freiburg (2008) and lives in Schwyz .

Life

Glutz von Blotzheim studied zoology at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland and received his doctorate there in 1957 with an anatomical thesis. From 1957 to 1966 he was initially a research assistant and then deputy head of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach . Since 1962 he has been teaching as a lecturer at the University of Bern . In 1965 he received the Venia docendi for ornithological ecology and related nature conservation issues, and since 1975 he has been an honorary professor . In 1998 he retired. Glutz von Blotzheim has also been involved in nature conservation, e.g. B. for the preservation of the Loorberweidenaue in the Urserental . He has lived in Schwyz since 1994.

Works

His best-known work is the Handbuch der Vögel Mitteleuropas , which was published in 23 volumes from 1966 and is still the standard work of German-speaking ornithology today. He has written other books, brochures and numerous magazine articles on ornithological topics. Selection:

In 2008 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg (Switzerland) and in 2012 he received the Konrad Lorenz Medal from the Konrad Lorenz Society for Environmental and Behavioral Studies .
