geography

Bettmar is located in the Hildesheimer Börde seven kilometers east of Hildesheim on the federal road 1 in the direction of Braunschweig and can be reached via the federal motorway 7 (junction no. 62 = Hildesheim). The western border is the city limit of Hildesheim. It is four kilometers to the administrative center of Schellerten. The Hildesheim – Braunschweig railway runs directly north of the village . The next train station is Hildesheim.

Place name

The ending “mer” or “mar” is derived from the Old High German “mari”, which indicates “swampy ground”.

history

Betmer is mentioned in a document for the first time in 1204 when a document from the Hildesheim Johannis Foundation mentions property in the place. A farming village emerged from the small settlement .

When the Hildesheim citizens built a land defense system from Itzum to the Bruchgraben , Bettmar became their easternmost base. In 1431 a watchtower and a barrier were built , the pictures of which still adorn the Bettmar coat of arms. The Bettmarer Pass formed the passage through the Heerstraße to Braunschweig . The street name Am Pass still reminds of him today .

In the period that followed, there were frequent disputes during which the facility was often destroyed. In 1613 the main building burned down, it was rebuilt and later expanded. It was not until 1819, when the passport was no longer necessary for the city of Hildesheim, that the facility was sold to a private person who set up an inn there that was in operation until a few years ago. Legend has it that Napoleon stopped at Bettmar on his campaign to Russia .

From 1795 to 1889 the Bettmar children were taught in the old schoolhouse, from 1889 to 1970 in a new building that now houses the Bettmar fire brigade.

When the Hildesheim-Braunschweig railway line was completed in 1888, a train station was built in Bettmar, but no trains have stopped there since 1980.

On March 1, 1974, Bettmar was relieved of his independence - as part of the Lower Saxony administrative reform - and is still one of twelve districts of the community of Schellerten .

Attractions

  • Catholic parish church St. Katharina , built in 1895 according to plans by Richard Herzig in the neo-Romanesque style. The church is similar to the other church buildings built by Herzig in Hildesheim and the surrounding area, for example the Bernward Church . Inside, the unusual painted wooden ceiling is particularly striking. Since 2014 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Nikolaus based in Ottbergen.
  • The main building of the Bettmarer Pass, which was used as an inn until a few years ago, can still be seen at Bundesstrasse 1 at the corner of Dinklarer Strasse. You can recognize it by the coat of arms of Bettmar drawn on the wall.
  • In the old town center of Bettmar there are some well-preserved farmhouses and half-timbered houses, for example in Turmstrasse.

Transport links

From Monday to Friday and on Saturdays, there are bus connections several times a day between Hildesheim and Bettmar as well as between Bettmar, Farmsen and other parts of the community of Schellerten. The Bettmar station was on the Hildesheim – Braunschweig railway line and was purely a depot ; it was abandoned as part of the double-track expansion of the line.
