The Bruchgraben is a 17 km long right tributary of the Innerste . It arises from the confluence of the Dingelber Klunkau and Dinklarer Klunkau near Schellerten and flows south of Sarstedt into the Innerste. It flows from its formation to the mouth from east to west. Between Algermissen and Harsum he crosses in three reinforced concrete diffusers the branch canal Hildesheim .
From the middle of the 19th century. Almost all of the floodplain areas were cultivated for agriculture and the moat was deepened and straightened to protect against flooding. Today it looks “canalized” and only has almost natural, structured sections in a few places.
Therefore, in 2014 it was planned to renature the nutrient-rich rift for around half a million euros in the next few years . In 2015 it was reported that no natural-looking river course would be created, but only the water temperature was to be lowered by planting the banks and by notches and bulges more biodiversity and improved self-cleaning should be made possible.
