Unrest in Mali in 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The riots in Mali were unrest by Malian professors , teachers , students and pupils against the regime under Moussa Traoré . Student demonstrations have been going on since the death of previous President Modibo Keïta in 1977 and have been suppressed. However, rising unemployment , inflation and even the lack of basic food made living conditions so severe that it drove large numbers of people onto the streets. This demand for democracy was responded to by the regime with arrests and torture. As a result, around 250 teachers emigrated. The teachers who stayed in the country and took part in the demonstrations were transferred to the country as punishment. As a result, all schools and around 70% of universities were closed for the 1980/81 school year. About 37,000 students were excluded from the final exams.
