The Erse at Wipshausen

The Aue (13.12 km) and Erse (35.88 km) are a 49 km long orographically right tributary of the Fuhse in Lower Saxony , Germany .

The floodplain earlier

The original headwaters of the floodplain lay roughly halfway between Watenstedt and Barum . The spring water of the floodplain collected first in two rivulets, they were at the same time the border of the districts of Barum and Leinde or Immendorf and Watenstedt. The floodplain flowed in a northerly direction, ran east and north of Watenstedt, from there receiving the water of the village ditch. In the further course in a northerly direction the village ditch of Hallendorf emptied from the west and the land weirs leading from Drütte into the floodplain from the east , as did the village ditches of Bleckenstedt , Beddingen , Sauingen and Üfingen . In the area just described, the development of large industrial companies ( Reichswerke Hermann Göring ) began in the late 1930s . Many infrastructural measures were associated with this: roads, railways and sewer systems were changed or newly constructed and the Salzgitter branch canal was also created as a connection to the Mittelland Canal. The floodplain, as a natural body of water, suffered severe interference. The headwaters at 96 m above sea level. NHN and also a much larger area was 99 to 101 m above sea level. NHN filled up. The extensive facilities of a rail vehicle manufacturer are located in this area. The water that accumulates there and with the neighboring commercial vehicle manufacturer is fed into the sewer system of the iron and steel works.

The floodplain today, a river without a source

Today the water of the floodplain is determined by industrial plants. The steelworks and steelworks deliver the largest amount (10–15 million m³ / a) of the floodplain water, it is led through the Beddinger culvert to the west side of the Salzgitter branch canal, where the floodplain begins today. It flows past Sauingen to Üfingen. Immediately to the south of the road leading past the sports field (Aue Stadium), the directions of the Aue and Fischaue, the right tributary of the Aue, cross. The floodplain water is channeled into the canalised river bed of the Fischaue in the east. With the Steterburger Graben, the Fischaue also brings in water from the car engine plant. The water flows through the culvert of the crossing structure into the river bed of the floodplain. In the canalised Fischaue the large amounts of floodwater flow to the rainwater retention basin immediately south of the Hildesheim-Braunschweig railway line. The water runs off into the floodplain. The fish floodplain starts again here, and it can also be fed into.

The course of the floodplain runs along Bleckenstedt , Üfingen , Wierthe , Vechelde , Vechelade and Bortfeld until the Mittelland Canal is reached south of Zweidorf . The water flows through the culvert and on between Wendeburg (long-term average: 22 million m³ / a) and Wendezelle through to the north of Harvesse , where the floodplain ends at the Schneegraben without an estuary.

The Erse

Between Harvesse and Wense , on the former border between the Duchy of Braunschweig and the Kingdom of Hanover , the Aue became the Erse , today's point of the name change is the confluence of the Schneegraben. The rest of the way leads the Erse past Wipshausen , Rietze , Eickenrode , Eltze and Uetze . From Rietze it flows in a north-westerly direction and flows into the Fuhse about 5 km north-west of Uetze .

On its 49 km long path from the beginning to the mouth, the river overcomes a height difference of 42 m, which corresponds to a mean bed gradient of 0.86 ‰.

Via the Prangenhohl , a roughly 400 m long ditch that begins at the weir above the Eltzer Mühle on the Fuhse and flows into the Erse before Benrode, Fuhse water is already supplied to it. This connection was used for water regulation and flood protection for Uetze.

  • Schneegraben (left) before Wense at 66  m above sea level. NN . The snow ditch - originally the natural water body " Rüper Bach" - got its name after the creation of an actual river bed. The snow ditch (from mhd. "Snede" = cutting edge, border) was the border ditch between the Duchy of Braunschweig and the Kingdom of Hanover .

history

The succession of Aue and Erse has also caused irritation in the past. The map made by Friedrich Wilhelm Ohsen, Hanover, in 1774 for postal purposes shows as a peculiarity: The floodplain seeps away in the lowland area south of Wendezelle and the Erse rises several kilometers east of it.

The Aue and Erse were regulated for the first time around 1750, when an actual river bed was created. As a result, bridges were now required, previously the fords met the requirements. Around 1850, during the separation , the Aue-Oker Canal was created at Wendezelle as a connection to the Oker in order to protect the Wendezelle and Wendeburg locations from flooding. The lowlands (meadows and pastures) of the floodplain were largely drained by the Mittelland Canal (construction period 1928 to 1932) and converted into arable land.

From 1757 the Fuhse Canal was dug between Rüningen and Sonnenberg as a continuation of an already existing Landwehr ditch. Although the canal only reached as far as the Aue, it still bears this name to this day and no longer begins at the western end of the Aue, but at the Salzgitter branch canal.

Since 2007 the Erse from Eickenrode to the confluence with the Fuhse has been a fauna and flora habitat . Rare species such as the green hippopotamus can be seen along the river , which are critically endangered according to the Red List of Endangered Species .

Water quality

The water quality is monitored by the NLWKN , which differentiates between the two water bodies Aue (No. 16053) and Fuhse (No. 16035). The structural quality of the upper course is rated as "noticeably impaired", that of the further course as "significantly impaired". The chemical pollution of the entire body of water is rated “good”, but some parameters such as phosphate and salinity show that the orientation value is exceeded. The biological condition is consistently "moderate" and the ecological condition is "bad". There is a catalog of measures for structural improvement for the entire body of water.
