The Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation ( NLWKN ) is a Lower Saxony state company based in Norden , which belongs to the division of the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection . This state company also has the function of an authority .
Emergence
The NLWKN was created on January 1, 2005 from the merger of several previously independent authorities:
- State agency for water management and coastal protection
- State Office for Ecology
- Departments for nature conservation and water management of the four district governments dissolved in 2004 ( Weser-Ems , Hanover , Lüneburg and Braunschweig ).
Through this merger, the state of Lower Saxony concentrated its state tasks of water management and nature conservation in a decentralized state authority, which from then on was no longer bound by administrative borders.

The directorate of the NLWKN is based in the city of Norden. The strategic tasks of the authority are processed here. The founding director was Siegfried Popp, his successor as director is Anne Rickmeyer. The specialist tasks on site are implemented in the operating offices. These are spread all over Lower Saxony and enable a regional presence: Aurich , Brake - Oldenburg , Cloppenburg , Hanover- Hildesheim , Lüneburg, Meppen , Norden- Norderney , Stade , Sulingen , Süd ( Braunschweig and Göttingen ) and Verden .

The company has seven vessels, each built for their different tasks and equipped, including the "Nynorderoog" which in 2017 was put into service " Leysand " was built in succession the " Janssand " the "Burchana.", The " Utlandshörn " and the " Leyhörn ".
