The Ruthenstrom barrage, which was put into operation in 1978, protects the Krautsand and the villages of Dornbusch, Drochtersen and Assel. Since the barrage is only passed through by small sport boats , a closed construction was chosen for reasons of cost.

The structure is 18.8 meters wide and 37 meters deep. It has two openings, each 7 meters wide, each of which can be closed by a mortise gate and a lifting gate. The jamb depth is 2.8 meters below sea level , the upper edge of the passage is 4.5 meters above sea level. The barrier is closed in the event of a storm surge from a water level of 2.2 meters above sea level in the winter half-year and 1.9 meters above sea level in the summer half-year.

The barrage is operated by the Stade site of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN).
