As a transverse structure, the Wischhafen barrage near Wischhafen separates the Wischhafener Süderelbe from the Elbe . It is part of a flood protection concept to that of the tides influenced Unterelbe from the barrage Geesthacht to the mouth of the river into the North Sea, the result of the severe storm surge in February 1962 has been developed. It is about 500 m upstream of the jetty for the Elbe ferry Glückstadt – Wischhafen .

The barrage was put into operation in 1978. It consists of a shipping opening and a sluice . The shipping opening, which has a clear width of 20 m, can be closed by two two-part mitred gates . The jamb depth is 4.50 m below sea ​​level . The sewer consists of two 5 m wide flood openings. Barrage and sluice are closed from a water level of 2.20 m above sea level.

The barrage is operated by the Stade site of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN).

There is a bascule bridge over the shipping opening . It is primarily used for commercial traffic for the maintenance and defense of the dike and is therefore usually open, i. H. folded up. Closed beyond the requirements of the dike operation, d. H. Open as a street and therefore accessible to the public, the bridge is open from May 1st to September 30th on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00. During these hours it is available for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. It is included in the North Sea Coast Cycle Route .
