The Elbe ferry Glückstadt – Wischhafen is a shipping company based in Glückstadt in Schleswig-Holstein . It operates the ferry connection of the same name, which has been the last possibility downstream from Hamburg to cross the Elbe between Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony by motor vehicle or bicycle since the Brunsbüttel – Cuxhaven ferry connection was closed . The ferry connects a pier near Glückstadt in the Steinburg district with the town of Wischhafen in the Stade district . In the future, the Flensburg shipping company FRS will take over the ferry line.

history

The company was founded in 1919 by Cape Hornier Ernst Sturm.

In 1981 the company was converted into a GmbH & Co. KG . The company is run in the third generation by the granddaughter of the company founder.

route

The ferry runs between the two ferry terminals in Glückstadt and Wischhafen. The jetty in Glückstadt protrudes about 500 m into the Elbe and has visitor parking spaces. The pier in Wischhafen is withdrawn approx. 500 m into the confluence of the Wischhafener Süderelbe. Here, too, there are visitor parking spaces and an inn “Wischhafener Fähranleger” about two kilometers away.

The Elbe is around 3.5 km wide at this point, the ferry route is around 4.5 km. It forms part of the federal highway 495 , the German ferry route and the green coastal route . Four free-moving ferries are used for transport (drive at the stern, turning maneuvers required when casting off in Wischhafen and when docking in Glückstadt). The regular schedule provides for two departures per hour on both sides during the day. When traffic is heavy, a ship runs every 20 minutes. The journey takes about 25 minutes.

Ferries

All four ships are almost identical, but the maximum loading height differs between 4.9 meters and 5.5 meters.

Serious storm

Ferry ship Ernst Sturm

The Ernst Sturm ferry has a capacity of around 60 cars or trucks. The capacity is around 260 meters in length in front of the docks. The clearance height, which is due to the wheelhouse located above the ferry deck, is 5.5 meters. It was named after the founder of the ferry company.

Wilhelm Krooss

The Wilhelm Krooss ferry also holds around 60 cars or a correspondingly smaller number of trucks. The wheelhouse is, however, mounted lower here, so that the passage height is only 4.9 meters.

Glückstadt

The loading capacity of the Glückstadt ferry is around 60 cars. The clearance is 5.1 meters.

Wischhafen

The Wischhafen was built in 1988 at the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde with the construction number 994 and the type designation 143. It was measured at 618 GT . The capacity corresponds to about 60 cars. The clearance height, which is due to the wheelhouse arranged above the ferry deck, is 5.5 meters.

Importance in bicycle traffic

The ferry connection is of particular importance for bicycle traffic. It is the cheapest way to cross the Elbe to get to the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein by bike and vice versa. The next possibility to cross the river is by taking a passenger ferry between Lühe and Wedel ( Lühe-Schulau ferry ) or 13 km upstream between the Hamburg districts of Cranz and Blankenese ( HBEL ).

Future prospects

In the long term, the ferry connection is to be replaced by a fixed Elbe crossing of the planned federal motorway 20 with a six-kilometer tunnel. The construction costs would amount to around 1.2 billion euros as a double tube design. The tunnel would have two lanes and a narrow hard shoulder. Construction could start in 2021 and construction is expected to take around six years. Since the tunnel would probably not be open to bicycles, the discontinuation of the ferry connection would in that case significantly worsen the traffic situation for cyclists. Pedestrians and all vehicles whose design-specific maximum speed is below 60 km / h would also be affected. Pedestrians and small two-wheelers could be transported like in the Lübeck Herrentunnel .
