Ferry landing in Cuxhaven

The Brunsbüttel – Cuxhaven ferry route connected Dithmarschen with the Elbe-Weser triangle over the Lower Elbe under the management of various shipping companies. Like the Elbe ferry Glückstadt – Wischhafen , which runs further up the Elbe , it connected the northern German states of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony .

history

In the 18th century, pilot boats provided an irregular connection between Brunsbüttel on the north bank and Cuxhaven on the south bank of the Elbe . The first independent ferry service was set up on February 26, 1904 by the North German Steamship Company . After a few months, the company went bankrupt. On April 3, 1908, the Cuxhaven-Brunsbüttel-Dampfer AG started operations. Greten Handorf from Cuxhaven succeeded in setting up a new line in 1919. On October 1, 1938, the Hapag sea bathing service took over the line. The Greifen shipping company Brunsbüttel followed later, and the ferry Seelotse GmbH in the 1960s .

1969-1981

From May 1, 1969 to July 1, 1981, the Elbe ferry Cuxhaven – Brunsbüttel was operated with the two green / white car ferries from Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein , from May 1, 1974, managed by HADAG .

1999-2001

In 1999 the Bremen shipowner Egon Herbert Harms tried to operate the connection with three ferries. The ships were named Hinrich-Wilhelm Kopf , Jochen Steffen and Wilhelm Kaisen . The connection had to be discontinued after two years due to a lack of profitability.

2015-2017

The ferry Grete of the Elb-Link shipping company

From August 20, 2015, the Elb-Link shipping company operated the ferry route between the Steubenhöft in Cuxhaven and the ferry terminal in the western area of Brunsbüttel with two double-ended ferries (built in 2010) of the type MM 90 FC . The two 98 m long and 18 m wide ferries built at the Norwegian shipyard Fiskerstrand BLRT AS have a draft of 4 m. They are measured at 5233  GT , have a diesel-electric drive and run at up to 16 knots. It took them 70 minutes for the 25 km route. According to the 2015/2016 autumn and winter timetable, they drove up to nine times a day in both directions.

The subsidiary of the Estonian shipping company Saaremaa Shipping Company renamed the ferries previously used in Estonia on August 19, 2015 in Cuxhaven with the name Grete and in Brunsbüttel with the name Anne-Marie . It was planned to use another ferry on the route from 2017. In the first six weeks (until the end of September 2015) the ferries carried 76,000 passengers, 15,600 cars , 877 trucks , 800 mobile homes and 9,500 two-wheelers.

According to a report by Norddeutscher Rundfunk from August 5, 2016, the ferry operator had financial problems. There was suspicion of bankruptcy, and several creditors had tried to force the Elb-Link shipping company to disclose its financial situation by threatening imprisonment.

At the beginning of March 2017, the ferry connection was discontinued after only one ferry had previously been used. The shipping company applied for bankruptcy on March 6th.

May to November 2017

On April 12, 2017, the Elb-Link Fährgesellschaft mbH project company was founded in order to resume ferry operations on May 22, 2017. In fact, the first ferry left on May 25, 2017.

On October 9, 2017, operations were stopped again after the managing director of the operating company had pointed out in a press release that the operation was not economically viable in the long term. As a result, it became known that the owner company of the ferry had forbidden further use of the only ferry, as there was no longer a valid rental agreement from September 30th. The ship owners expect a sustainable financial offer from the operating company, which cannot be given. The operating company was looking for financially strong investors and / or public funding, for which the affected districts and cities saw no possibility. On November 27, the operating company filed for bankruptcy. In 2018 the ferries were sold to Canada.

As of 2018

In autumn 2018, the newly founded company Elbeferry GmbH announced that it would resume ferry operations in spring 2019 with the Fanafjord ferry from Norway . The planned connection has not yet been established.
