The Steubenhöft is a pier in the America Harbor in Cuxhaven . It is named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben . Today it is used by cruise , ferry and seaside ships .

history

Already since 1889 frequented fast steamer of HAPAG en route to New York . When the transatlantic ships became so large at the beginning of the 20th century that they could only call at their home port of Hamburg with difficulty, a new landing stage was built in Cuxhaven, then Hamburg, from 1911 - with a connection to the Niederelbebahn to Hamburg - which was completed in 1913. In the last few years before the First World War, the world's largest ships of the Imperator class then set off here for New York and Boston . This is how the America Harbor got its name.

Travelers and emigrants could get to the ships through the Hapag halls (built 1900–1902), which have their own “ Cuxhaven America Station ”.

The Hamburg-based Hanseatic of the Deutsche Atlantic Linie shipping company was the first passenger ship in 1958 to regularly return to the route between Cuxhaven and New York after the Second World War . The transatlantic scheduled service ended in 1972 after the appearance of long-haul jets .

In the 1950s, the Steubenhöft was rebuilt in its current form. Today the building houses a restaurant and the Elbe pilots' watch. In the adjoining hall, a small exhibition by the Hapag-Halle Cuxhaven eV development association gives information about events in historical times. In addition, you can search online in the CUXAUS database for emigration from the district of Cuxhaven.

The Elb-Link shipping company has been operating the ferry route between Steubenhöft and Brunsbüttel since August 20, 2015 . On February 28, 2017, the ferry ceased operations and an application for bankruptcy was filed.

From May 25, 2017, the ferry service with the German flag GRETE was resumed. Not even five months later, on October 10, 2017, the ferry service will be stopped again. The operator of the Elbe ferry filed for bankruptcy on November 27, 2017. Efforts are underway to operate a ferry line again from April 1, 2019.

With the Greater Hamburg Law of 1937, Cuxhaven passed from Hamburg to the Prussian province of Hanover ; However, Hamburg retained some rights to the ports. Until January 1, 1993, the Amerika-Hafen and the Steubenhöft were owned by Hamburg, although they belong to the city of Cuxhaven.
