The Heimatbund der Männer vom Morgenstern (MvM), based in Bremerhaven , has more than 1,300 members (including women) and is one of the most important local history associations in Bremen and Lower Saxony . The yearbook published by him is an important regional historical journal.

history

Morgenstern Castle in Weddewarden

The unusual name goes back to the first chairman of the association, the marching poet Hermann Allmers (1821-1902) from Rechtenfleth an der Unterweser . On the site of Morgenstern Castle, which was built and destroyed in 1518 , he founded the sociable group of "Men from Morgenstern" in Weddewarden's Gasthof Schloß Morgenstern in 1882 . This is how today's Heimatbund developed. In 1896 Jan Bohls started a prehistoric collection in a house at Hafenstrasse  6. She founded the Morgenstern Museum , which became the Bremerhaven Historical Museum .

distribution

Its sphere of activity extends over the entire Elbe-Weser triangle . It is predominantly the northern areas of the Kingdom of Hanover ( Land Wursten , Land Hadeln , Cuxhaven ) and the seaside town of Bremerhaven. Membership is not tied to a place of residence in the area of activity.

archeology

After the death of Hermann Allmers, the Heimatbund turned to archeology . He secured numerous finds from prehistory and early history in the Morgenstern Museum on the Geestemünder Hauptkanal. The collaboration with Carl Schuchhardt from Hanover, who researched early medieval ramparts such as the Pipinsburg (Sievern) , proved to be particularly fruitful . Through the yearbooks that have been published since 1898 and other book publications, the Heimatbund has proven to be an important history association in the area around Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven.

Hermann Allmers Prize and Mill Foundation

On the initiative of the association, the Hermann Allmers Prize has been awarded to deserving homeland researchers every two years since 1957 . It is endowed with € 3000 and is supported by the Heimatbund der Männer vom Morgenstern, the Rüstringer Heimatbund, the cities of Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven as well as the district of Cuxhaven and the district of Wesermarsch .

The Heritage Association ensures the maintenance of regional wind and water mills by 1979 in cooperation with the Weser-Elbe-Sparkasse built mill Foundation , which has paid more than € 250,000 in aid to local mill owners and clubs ever since.

aims

According to its statutes, the men want from the morning star

  1. explore the homeland, its history and nature
  2. Maintain and protect the culture and nature of the homeland
  3. keep the Low German language alive
  4. support family history research
  5. particularly promote the literature in these areas.

Composition and articles of association

The most important organs of the Heimatbund are the board of directors, the advisory board and the general assembly. While the board of directors, elected for three years, manages day-to-day business, it is supported by the advisory board (with a maximum of 40 association members) in which the working groups, the chairmen of friendly associations and particularly knowledgeable members are represented. The advisory board meets with the board as required, but at least once a year. The general meeting must be held at least once a year. Their tasks include in particular the election of the board of directors and the resolution of amendments to the articles of association.

Chairperson

Allmers Society

The befriended Hermann Allmers Society looks after the Allmers house and the grave complex in the local cemetery in Rechtenfleth . She manages the poet's estate and researches its aftermath.

Publications, museum and library

Diverse results of scientific regional research from the region at the mouth of the Elbe and Weser are summarized every year in a yearbook that every member of the MvM receives; the reference is included in the membership fee. It is an important historical publication option for the region and, in addition to the scientific articles, also contains a detailed review section.

In addition, special publications are issued in book form, which members can purchase at preferential prices. For many years, the MvM's Mitteilungsblatt, the Niederdeutsche Heimatblatt , has been published monthly as a supplement to the Nordsee-Zeitung , with smaller treatises on local research and care as well as news from club life.

The Morgenstern Museum will continue as the historical museum of the city of Bremerhaven in a new building on the banks of the Geeste.

The association library with around 12,000 book titles and 130 journals is available to all members as a reference library free of charge. The MvM library is located in Morgenstern Castle, Burgstrasse 1. It is also open to non-members interested in local history.
