Archaeological excavations from 1979 to 1981 found traces of settlement from the first century AD.

In 1091 the Frisian settlement Widewrde was mentioned in a document from the Archbishopric of Bremen , when ten Frisians transferred their inheritance to Archbishop Liemar and they received it back as a fief . The Frisian word Wierde was used to designate a village wurt or terp, i.e. a settlement hill artificially made of earth in the frequently flooded marshland. Weddewarden is documented as the oldest town in Bremerhaven.

Weddewarden belonged to the Imsum parish . The Bartholomäuskirche was built in 1218 and demolished in 1895. The so-called ox tower is a remnant of it. In 1684 the parish consisted of Imsum, Weddewarden, things and parts of Büttel. In 1291, the Wurtfriesen in the Land of Wursten in Weddewarden negotiated a peace with the city of Bremen, which concerned the problems of beach robbery among shipwrecked Bremen merchant ships.

Conflicts with the Archbishop of Bremen influenced the further development. Archbishop Christoph sent a mercenary army to the land of Wursten in December 1517, which were defeated in the Battle of Wremer Siel . In order to secure its possessions, the archbishopric built Morgenstern Castle on Weddewardener Deich in 1517/18 , with Claus Fiegen as Drost. However, this was destroyed again in 1518 by Duke Magnus von Lauenburg, the new ally of the Wurster Frisians. Today the restaurant of the same name is located here. From the rural Weddewarden are u. a. the Sibbern farm from 1838, the Rall farm from around 1900 and the Friesenstube from 1882 have been preserved. In 1859 a two-class school was set up on Wurster Strasse .

In 1872 construction began on the Weser forts Brinkamahof II in front of Weddewarden and Langlütjen  II . In 1877 the neo-Gothic Protestant Zion Church Weddewarden-Imsum was consecrated on Wurster Straße.

In 1882 the poet Hermann Allmers from Rechtenfleth and friends founded the sociable group of men from Morgenstern - Heimatbund at the mouth of the Elbe and Weser - in the restaurant Schloss Morgenstern . The association put together a collection that mainly consisted of archaeological and folklore objects. In 1902 the collection was assigned to the Geestemünde community. The Morgenstern Museum was created in 1906 and is now the Bremerhaven Historical Museum .

In 1927 a bus route operated by the Bremerhaven-Wesermünde AG tram ran to the district. In 1928 the volunteer fire brigade Weddewarden was founded. From 1935 the Weddewarden airfield was expanded into an air base.

In 1947 Wesermünde was incorporated into the state of Bremen and renamed Bremerhaven. In 1952 the new Weddewarden school was completed.

The Bremerhaven container terminal, which had been under construction since 1968, was steadily moving closer to Weddewarden. The planning approval procedure for the CT IV container terminal in Weddewarden, which was built from 2004 to 2008, began in 2002 . 340 meters of the Stromkaje were added and the entire Stromkaje is now 4930 meters long.

The extension of the quay took place against the protest of many citizens of Weddewarden. The Bremerhaven magistrate has therefore issued a guarantee of existence for the location.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1927, the previously independent community of Weddewarden, with its 485 inhabitants, was incorporated into the Prussian city of Wesermünde , which was founded in 1924 .
