Location of Schiffdorferdamm in Bremerhaven

Schiffdorferdamm ( Low German Schippdkörpersdamm ) is a district in the southern district of the municipality of Bremerhaven in the state of Bremen .

geography

Schiffdorferdamm lies in the east of the city and borders the Geestemünde district in the west and the municipality of Schiffdorf in the east .

history

Schiffdorferdamm used to belong to the municipality of Schiffdorf, which was first mentioned in 1139. The first settlers were to be found in Schiffdorferdamm around 1780. Further settlements followed in 1842 and at the end of the 19th century the number of new settlers increased considerably as there was cheap building land here. The "dam" became an urban suburb for workers, in contrast to the more rural shipping village. The later district of Schiffdorferdamm with around 1000 inhabitants was separated from the municipality of Schiffdorf in 1927 and incorporated into Wesermünde . More than two thirds of the district consisted of meadows and fields. The district has belonged to Bremerhaven since 1947. From December 1947 to 1958 trolleybuses drove to Schiffdorferdamm. The terminus was in the Lower Saxony community of Schiffdorf. A hall for the trolleybuses was built on the north side of Schiffdorfer Chaussee in 1949. In 1971, Schiffdorferdamm became a district through a redistribution of the districts in Bremerhaven. The Reinkenheide Central Hospital was established in 1972; today the Bremerhaven Clinic with around 1700 employees and 700 beds.
