history

Since 2011, Bederkesa and Langen have tried to merge due to aid from the state to reduce the debts of the municipalities that merge. The merger was completed in August 2012 with the territorial change agreement. The law on the new formation of the city of Geestland brought the deliberations to a conclusion. A future contract from September 2011 regulates the financial situation.

Geestland won the German Sustainability Award 2017 in the medium-sized cities and municipalities category, the German local sustainability award ZeitzeicheN and the 2014 Mission Olympic sporting city competition .

Origin of name

The first suggested name for the new city was Wesermünde . The neighboring city of Bremerhaven rejected this name, as the seaside city itself was called Wesermünde from 1924 to 1947 . In a legal opinion from Bremerhaven it was said that the name Wesermünde was "in blatant contradiction to the actual geographic location". The new city only has contact with the Weser in Imsum. The name therefore contradicts the information function required by law. For the merger partners Langen and Bederkesa, this argumentation was incomprehensible, as a good part of the city created by the merger lies in the area of the former Wesermünde district . To avoid a conflict, Langen's mayor Thorsten Krüger (SPD) suggested the name Neu Wesermünde . At the same time, Krüger stated: "The city name is only a first working title". Bremerhaven also protested against this proposal. In order not to jeopardize the required Lower Saxony law and the agreements of the future contract, the two municipalities distanced themselves from the name Wesermünde . After discussing various proposed names, the councils decided on April 23, 2012 with over 90% the name "Geestland".

coat of arms

Geestland coat of arms
Blazon : " Diagonally right divided by a silver wave bar , below in blue a golden sun wheel , above in red an inclined silver key with the beard upwards."
Justification of the coat of arms: The key is borrowed from the coat of arms of the city of Bremen , it is the attribute of St. Peter , the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Bremen . From 1381 to 1654, most of the city area belonged to the city of Bremen. The sun wheel from the coat of arms of the city of Langen indicates the numerous excavations from old Germanic times in the area of the city of Langen. The silver wave bar symbolizes the Weser . The colors silver and red are the colors of the diocese and the city of Bremen. The colors blue and gold refer to the national colors of the Kingdom of Sweden , to which the Duchy of Bremen, in which today's urban area was located, belonged from 1648 to 1719.

Partnerships

Since 2013, the city of Geestland has maintained a climate partnership with the Leribe district in Lesotho as part of an Engagement Global initiative . A connection has existed for many years via a Lesotho group in the Geestland district of Langen and through the partnership between two primary schools in the two communities. After several mutual visits by the climate partnership delegations, bilateral climate protection measures are planned. For example, through afforestation and the construction of systems to slow down the draining water, the soil erosion promoted by the heavy rainfall in the rainy season in the Leribe district is to be reduced. In addition, various orchards were created from 2015 . Furthermore, a project for an improved waste management is being worked on.

Geestland maintains a partnership with the city of Tozeur in Tunisia as part of the municipal knowledge transfer Maghreb-Germany .

Economy and Transport

economy

As a climatic health resort and mud spa, Bad Bederkesa has a strong tourist economic area.

Langen, as a basic center with a medium-central sub-function, has strong economic ties with Bremerhaven; many residents work here.

The other districts are characterized by agriculture and forestry. In addition, many residents work in Bremerhaven.

traffic

Street

Geestland is on the A 27 federal motorway from Bremerhaven to Cuxhaven . The junction points Debstedt and Neuenwalde exist here.

train

A train station with public transport is not located in the city area. The closest passenger stops are Wremen on the Bremerhaven – Cuxhaven railway line and Bremerhaven-Lehe on the Bremen – Bremerhaven railway line . Both stations are served by the regional train RB 33 Buxtehude - Bremervörde - Bremerhaven - Cuxhaven every hour. Bremerhaven-Lehe train station is also the end point of the regional S-Bahn line RS 2 and the regional express lines RE 8 and RE 9.

The Bremerhaven – Cuxhaven and the Bremerhaven – Bederkesa museum railway are located within the urban area , the latter almost entirely.

Public transport

The city of Geestland is part of the tariff area of the Bremen / Lower Saxony transport association (VBN) . While the city of Langen already belonged to the VBN before the municipal merger, the catchment area of the former municipality of Bederkesa was only incorporated as a separate tariff zone on January 1, 2016. Before that, the tariff of the North East Lower Saxony Transport Association (VNN) applied in the parts of the municipality .

The districts of Langen, Debstedt and Imsum are served by the city bus routes 505, 506, 509, ML and NL operated by Bremerhaven Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH . On weekdays the buses run every 30 minutes during rush hour, with lines 505 and 506 overlapping each other in Langen every 15 minutes.

From 1919 to 1958 the VGB trams drove to Langen and from 1961 to 1980 the buses were parked in a new VGB depot on the city limits because the depot in Lehe was no longer suitable for expanding and modernizing the bus fleet. The site was the new terminus of tram line 2 as early as 1958.

The rest of the municipality is mainly served by the lines 525 Bad Bederkesa - Bremerhaven, 528 Otterndorf - Bremerhaven and 550 Nordholz / Midlum - Bremerhaven. In addition, there are a large number of lines that run as VBN lines but are primarily used for school traffic. As a result, large parts of the urban area are not served during the school holidays.

In the Bad Bederkesa area, a bundle of lines will be operated by a corporate cooperation until 2024. It consists of the KVG Stade , the Omnibusbetrieb Wilhelm Giese Nachf. GmbH (Beverstedt), the travel service of Rahden GmbH & Co. KG (Schwanewede), the Buspunkt GmbH (Beverstedt), the Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser GmbH , the Autobus Stoss GmbH (Bremervörde) and Maass Reisen GmbH (Cuxhaven). KVG Stade and Giese share the operation of the main line 525.

Lines 528 and 550 lead beyond the city of Geestland and are the responsibility of KVG Stade. It has transferred the transport operations in the catchment area of the city of Otterndorf to Lührs Reisen GmbH (Wingst) and in the municipality of Wurster Nordseeküste to Maass Reisen GmbH (Cuxhaven).

Street lighting

Langen was the first municipality in Germany to completely convert its street lighting to LED technology . In 2012, the city received the European Commission's Green Light Award for this pioneering project . In the course of the merger of the city of Langen with the joint municipality of Bederkesa, the project was expanded to include the joint municipality area. Since 2016, Geestland has been equipping all of its luminous points on the streets with an intelligent control system, which significantly reduces energy consumption.
