Others

In 2007 it became known that in the village of Mittelstenahe with 260 inhabitants 30 cancer cases had been recorded in the previous ten years. Compared to the Lower Saxony average of 0.77% of the population, the value here was very high at 11%. The reason is suspected to be two directional radio links of the German armed forces, which intersect over the place. The radio links were part of a Hawk anti-aircraft missile position that was abandoned in 2002 . Mayor Helck and Mayor Otten wanted to ensure that extensive scientific studies are carried out. Lower Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs, Mechthild Ross-Luttmann (CDU), has made this topic the top priority. District Administrator Kai-Uwe Bielefeld from the district of Cuxhaven did not agree to a financial commitment by the district to cover the costs.

At the council meeting of the community of Mittelstenahe on April 28, 2008, Mr. Michael Hoopmann, Lower Saxony State Health Office (NLGA), presented the report on the recording of cancer cases. According to this, no unusual accumulation of cancer cases can be determined in the Börde Lamstedt. According to the conclusion of the comprehensive final report of the NLGA, the initial suspicion of an accumulation of cancer diseases has not been confirmed.

This report was presented to the public on Monday, May 19, 2008, 8 p.m. in the Gasthaus Katt, Mittelsten, as part of a public information session.
