history

Before the birth of Christ, a Germanic tribe, the Chauken , settled in the estuary of the Elbe and Oste . The lowland settlements on the Wurten existed until the 12th century. It was then that the systematic cultivation of marshland and moor began; the dikes with the locks for the irrigation and drainage of the land, the canals, the gates and ditches were built.

The place east was first mentioned in 1220. It was owned by the Knights of the East as a fief of the Archbishopric of Bremen . Before 1250, the family's younger sons emigrated to Pomerania and settled there. The family that still exists today has the waves of the Oste and the Bremen key in their coat of arms . In 1391 the ferry route, lock and church were badly damaged in a severe storm surge. From 1450 to 1650 the von Rönne family was enfeoffed with the east. The river on its coat of arms became the official seal of the city during this time. Today's city coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of the previous owners, the Lords of the East.

The manor was then acquired by the Scottish mercenary officer Andreas von Melville , whose daughter Charlotte Sophie married Alexander von der Schulenburg in 1690 . This estate, located in the Altendorf district, came to the Counts of Schulenburg by inheritance in 1748 , and they still manage it today.

In 1526, Osten became Protestant. In 1717 the Christmas flood in the east killed 17 people. In 1773 a fire destroyed a total of 42 houses. In 1852 the increasing importance of the place was taken into account with the establishment of the Royal Office East and the Royal District Court East. In 1881, the Basbeck-Osten train station (now Hemmoor) was connected to the Hamburg - Cuxhaven railway line . In the course of the Prussian administrative reform in 1885, the East and Neuhaus offices became the Neuhaus an der Oste district, which made the East politically less important. In 1909, a special river crossing was inaugurated with the transporter bridge, which became the town's landmark. The current community of Osten was formed by the Lower Saxony community reform on July 1, 1972 from the previously independent communities of Osten, Altendorf and Isensee. The East District Court was dissolved in 1973 after 121 years.

coat of arms

Coat of arms from the east
Blazon : Split ; front:four silver wavy bars in blue ; back: in silver half a red gold - armored eagle at the gap. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms is based on the seal of the parish of the east from 1633. The wave bars point to the Oste and other watercourses in the district.
  • The wave beams are borrowed from the coat of arms of the noble family von der Osten , which was first mentioned in a document in 1219.

Culture and sights

Buildings

St. Peter's Church

The stylish baroque church of St. Petri was rebuilt from bricks in 1746/1747 by the Hamburg builder Johann Leonhard Prey . Prey was the co-builder of the Hamburg main church St. Michaelis, the Hamburg Michel . From the dimensions of the church you can still see the prosperity of the Easterners at that time. The interior furnishings from the time it was built have been preserved unchanged; it is unmistakably similar to that of the Hamburger Michel. The baroque pulpit altar with its more than 10 m high back wall, the two-storey west gallery, the long row of the Gutspriechen, the flat wooden barrel vault with the lavish ornamental decoration above the large nave can impress with the uniformity of the late baroque style. The organ was created by Jakob Albrecht in 1751. A new organ was installed in the old prospectus by the Peternell brothers in 1890 . The organ was restored in 1992.

Transporter bridge

Transporter bridge in operation

Osten has the oldest transporter ferry in Germany, which has been a connection across the Oste River since 1909 . Their construction, with a clearance height of 30 m above sea level, enables even larger sailing ships to pass through. At the time of its construction, the Oste was still an important trade route with heavy shipping traffic, whereas today the river is used for tourism.

The ferry had a load capacity of 18 tons and could transfer up to eight passenger cars or 100 people to the other side of the river in about three minutes.

The transporter bridge is now a technical monument . However, it is only in operation for tourist purposes, since the 495 federal road has made it easier to cross the Oste since 1974 . Since only eight ferries of this type are known worldwide, one of them in Rendsburg, others in Spain and other countries, the importance of the Ostener Ferry as a cultural monument was recognized, and the Spanish King Juan Carlos I took over the patronage of the newly founded world association of Suspension ferries .

The Deutsche Fährstraße , a tourist holiday route that opened in summer 2004 and leads from Bremervörde to Kiel , connects the eastern monument with the second German transporter bridge over the Kiel Canal between Rendsburg and the municipality of Osterrönfeld , with the east since 2005 a communal " Partnership under the sign of the transporter ferry ”. The transporter bridge has been completely restored since 2006 and is once again transporting interested people.

Museums

The Ostener Museum Alte Rektorschule with a local parlor and a bottle museum shows a collection of around 4,500 containers of alcoholic beverages that the liquor manufacturer Jan ten Doornkaat has compiled over 35 years.

Club life

The village community is organized in numerous associations. The Schüttdamm-Isensee shooting club from 1901 e. V. is one of the largest shooting clubs in Lower Saxony with around 770 members. The Landjugend Isensee has existed since November 11, 2005.
