Alexander von der Schulenburg

Alexander von der Schulenburg , since 1713 Freiherr von der Schulenburg , (born September 24, 1662 in Altenhausen ; † January 13, 1733 in Celle ) was a lieutenant general and governor of Celle from the Elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg and owner of part of the Altenhausen manor.

origin

Alexander von der Schulenburg was from the white line of the Altmark Uradelsgeschlechtes those of Schulenburg . His parents were Alexander von der Schulenburg (* September 23, 1616; † March 17, 1681) and his wife Adelheid Agnes von Alvensleben (* March 2, 1636; † January 12, 1668).

Life

After studying at university, he volunteered in the army and took part in the Turkish Wars from 1683 to 1688. He then went to Braunschweig-Lüneburg services and fought against the French from 1688 to 1697. As early as 1690 he was colonel of a cavalry regiment, in the battle of Neerwinden in 1693 he was taken prisoner by the French. During the War of the Spanish Succession he was in 1704 as a major general in the army of the Duke of Marlborough . There he commanded a cavalry brigade in the battle of Schellenberg and in the battle of Höchstädt . In 1705 he went to Flanders with the Duke. In the battle of Oudenaarde on July 11, 1708 he was lieutenant general in the entourage of the electoral prince of Hanover (later: King George II ), where he was able to distinguish himself with a cavalry attack. On July 6, 1708, he commanded the army's vanguard consisting of 5 battalions and 10 squadrons. With this vanguard he attacked the French rearguard and was able to take several hundred prisoners. In the battle of Malplaquet he commanded a cavalry division under General von Bülow.

He was elevated to the status of imperial baron on December 4, 1713 and received the Order of the Black Eagle from the Prussian king .

family

He married on February 13, 1690 Charlotte Sophie Anna von Melville (born January 28, 1670, † August 1724) the daughter of Major General Andreas von Melville . The couple had the following children:

After his death, the burden of debt was so great that Altenhausen's father's inheritance, the Schäferhof, had to be sold to his brother Daniel Ludolph.
